In 2019 Whakaari, a volcano close to New Zealand exploded. This fabulous documentary tells the tale of those who were touring the island on that fateful day. With amazing first-person tales and footage the story unfolds in almost real time. But, ‘The Volcano: Rescue From Whakaari’ also shines a light on the failures of government and its emergency efforts in times of disaster. The story of that fateful day, as told in this amazing film, is one that should be known. Please give this film, currently on Netflix, a viewing. A documentary classic that you might have missed!
On December 9th, 2019 Whakaari volcano erupted. Just off the coast of New Zealand this active volcano is an attraction for visitors, tourists and scientists. On that fateful day tours, by both sea and helicopter, went out to Whakaari. Known also as “White Island” due to its frequent smoke and activity, Whakaari hosted 49 people that day. Not all of them would make it home.
Survivors, sharing personal footage and their harrowing stories, provide details of that horrible event. The details are frightening, severe and heartrending. The videos they took on that day are astonishing. Such a fascinating and unique place could turn to horror so quickly. The actions of everyone involved are a fascinating, if difficult, story. One that should be seen!
But, also astonishing is the reaction of New Zealand’s emergency services. Those entrusted to help when it is needed most, decided that it was too dangerous to offer any aid. All those people were left to fend for themselves. It was only through the courageous efforts of private citizens that many people survived. The contrast of first-responders to private rescuers is a cautionary tale for everyone. Often it is an unknown stranger, just someone who feels your need, that rises to your rescue. My most heartfelt appreciation and recognition go out to all those who help others just because they need it!
Both appalling and gratifying, ‘The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari’ is a must see for all viewers. Again, it is currently on Netflix for subscribers to share.
Side note: While you watch the film you will learn that the Volcano erupts regularly. Since this disaster in 2019, the island has been off-limits to tourists.
I saw this movie. Many times it is the kindness of strangers that saves the day and this movie shows a prime example of that. In today's world where it is all too easy to vilify our neighbors anonymously, it is a great reminder that those very neighbors may be the ones to have your back when you truly need the help. I recommend watching this movie.
